Pastor Brian Goke looks at Acts 2:1-13 and provided us with reasons why Pentecost matters. The word Pentecost means fiftieth. The Jews used this name to note Shavuot or the Feast of Harvest which starts fifty days after Passover. The day commemorates God giving the Law at Mount Sinai to the Israelites. In Acts 2, God gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to those gathered together in Jerusalem to observe this Feast. Those gathered heard something, saw something, and said something.
Pentecost matters because as followers of Jesus, we can expect attacks. Those gathered on that first Pentecost experienced such attacks. The world didn’t understand then and it doesn’t understand today. Pentecost also matters because as followers of Jesus, we have opportunities to share the good news of salvation. Those present on the first Pentecost went and shared and likewise we too should do the same!
