Devotional – Qualified!

Do you ever feel unqualified to make a difference in this world? I know, I certainly do. And yet, I’m reminded that God does not call those who are the most qualitied to impact the world; God calls ordinary people like you and me to do His work in this world. After all,

Noah was a drunk, Abraham was too old, Isaac was a daydreamer, Jacob was a liar, Leah was ugly, Joseph was abused, Moses had a stuttering problem, Gideon was afraid, Samson was a womanizer, Rahab was a prostitute, Jeremiah was too young, David was an adulterer, Elijah was suicidal, Isaiah preached naked, Jonah ran from God, Naomi was a widow, Job went bankrupt, John the Baptist ate bugs, Andrew lived in the shadow of his big brother, Peter denied Christ, the disciples fell asleep while praying (and ran away when Jesus really needed them), Martha worried about everything, the Samaritan woman was divorced (more than once), Mary Magdalene was demon-possessed, Zacchaeus was too small, Timothy had an ulcer, Paul was a murderer (even a terrorist), and Lazarus was dead. And that’s just a partial list of people from the Bible. Of course, if God can use these people He can certainly use you and me!

God has created each one of us unique and gifted to serve in particular places and times. In many ways, this is what our summer sermon series, “Better Together” is all about. It’s about growing in our knowledge of ourselves so that we can become a better version of who God created us to be. In Psalm 139, David prays, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” The Enneagram personality assessment is just one of many tools at our disposal to learn more about ourselves. As you are reflecting on your type (and wings!), may Jesus encourage and strengthen you to become a healthier you. And as you lean into your strengths, may you feel more qualified to serve those around you in your daily life. Amen.
