Pastor Brian Goke posits that Jesus’ command for his disciples to love our enemies is not hyperbole. The concept of going against the flow and loving others was not new to the nation of Israel. However, in his sermon recorded in Luke 6, Jesus takes this love to what seems to be an impossible level. He commands all who are committed to him and his mission to “reverse the flow” and love enemies. Jesus doesn’t want us weighed down by tightly holding the temporary, worldly things. He frees us to open-handedly give, serve and love – the very reasons we are on this earth. We can attempt loving enemies as we grow in spiritual maturity, praying for the Holy Spirit to work in and through us.
