Pastor Brian Goke describes a Christophany–the very presence of God-as he physically and metaphorically wrestled with Jacob. God graciously chastens those whom he loves. He pursued Jacob, allowing for wrestling and providing opportunity for restoration. In the immediate moment following Jacob’s confession of his true identity, God gives him a new name – Israel. Like Jacob, when we acknowledge who we really are and surrender to God’s will, we are no longer defined by our past. Our new names are redeemed, blessed, beloved, victorious… and reach forward into all God has for us!
