Pastor Brian Goke recounts that in Caesarea Philippi, an area rife with temples to various gods, Jesus asked his disciples who he is. Peter identified Jesus as the Messiah sent from God. What Jesus revealed about himself, however, was the opposite of what the disciples expected. Accepting this gospel paradox and living in him by dying to ourselves every day is at the heart of the discipleship journey. Unlike the free gift of salvation, our part of sanctification requires intentional work in walking more closely with God. As we set ourselves and our desires aside, Jesus frees and reconciles us with God!
